Opensource software

An article appeared in the press stating that the government is looking to moving away from Microsoft and using opensource software. Is anyone doing this in their schools? How do we feel about it? What might we consider using?

  1. In my opinion some sorts of open source software are different from others –

Office-type products eg MS Word & Excel are still widely used in industry, so important, And they have functionality missing from eg Google docs so I would like to continue with these, esp if they became free! Btw Office 365 via mail not a reasonable replacement.

Other open source softwares eg Scratch are great to use.

Actually the only proprietorial software we would need is MS office – subject to COPPA law adherence, most other computing curriculum areas could be successfully addressed with free web-based products. 2Simple is a nice luxury too.

  2. I agree with you, we are using Kodu, Scratch, code.org all free to use and the children love them. People also have to remember that Microsoft work can be viewed on a MAC but MAC open source can not normally be read in a Microsoft document.
